Siblings go through rough patches, it just comes with the territory. But for most siblings, those rough patches aren’t broadcast for the entire world to see.
For years, Prince Wiliam and Prince Harry were seen as a twosome. They were always at public events together and they grew even closer when their mother Princess Diana died. But since they have both gotten married, there have been reports of a rift between the brothers.
The royal split
When Prince Harry married Meghan Markle, the two decided that they would like to have their own royal household rather than be grouped in with William and Kate Middleton.
“They have always been different, they are very different characters,” a source told People of the royal siblings. “They drew great comfort from each other when their mother died, and as they’ve grown up together. But they need to be separate. Now Meghan has arrived it is the right time to make that break.”
By splitting the households, Harry and Markle can focus on the things that are important to them.
“The arrival of Meghan has changed the dynamic of the relationship in a fairly significant way,” royals author Sally Bedell Smith told People. “It is inevitable and practical because it gives Harry and Meghan some freedom to build up their own collection of interests and charities.”
Prince Harry admits to tension
Though multiple outlets had reported on the tension between the brothers, Prince Harry had never commented on it directly until his ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey.
“Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under… inevitably, you know, stuff happens,” he said.
“But, look, we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me.”
But not all of the rumors are true.
“We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but I love him dearly,” he continued. “The majority of stuff is created out of nothing.”
They don’t support one another
In the same documentary, Markle came out and revealed that she was struggling with being royal and all of the criticism that she has received from it.
“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging,” she said. “So you add [media attention] on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed … Not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through.”
You may think that since that revelation, the brothers would be more inclined to look after one another and their wives but that hasn’t been the case.
“There hasn’t been this complete 180,” a source told People. “Nothing has changed. They don’t speak, no one is checking in, no one is texting.”
Harry and Markle have decided to spend the holidays in America this year, so hopefully, some time apart will allow the couples to come back together, refreshed and ready to work things out.
