How Princess Beatrice became the most popular royal

The newly-engaged Princess of York has a coterie of A-list friends and fans, and is winning praise for her fashion choices

Just as the popularity of the ‘woke’ Duke and Duchess of Sussex nosedives sharper than a turbulent private jet trip and the Cambridges’ budget airline piety soars like a towering public retort, the royal engine is whirring into overdrive.

At least the Queen can breathe a sigh of relief that there is one royal flying under the radar, living her best life. While at Balmoral tensions reached fever pitch, in south-west London all was serene as Beatrice gathered her inner circle around her for a 31st birthday dinner under Battersea’s arches. The armoury of modern day ladies-in-waiting included Gabriela Peacock, Holly Branson, Astrid Harbord and Sabine Getty. Her father might be causing a royal rumpus, but Queen Bea is the toast of the town.

The recent transformation of Her Majesty’s granddaughter is one of fairytale proportions. Gone are the days of that contorted Philip Treacy pretzel-hat calamity at Kate and Will’s wedding in 2011 ‒ Princess Beatrice has grown into a swan, making a stealth rise in social circles and topping best dressed lists everywhere (most notably since her sister Princess Eugenie’s wedding last year).

Her newfound exuberance could be to do with being surrounded by the coolest set in town. It could also be thanks to her new millionaire beau, property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, whose latest love token adorns her wrist: a Cartier Juste un Clou 18ct yellow-gold bracelet, engraved with the initial E.

It is believed she struck up a relationship with the old family friend (who has a two-year-old child from a previous relationship) after reconnecting at the Windsor Castle ceremony last October.

Or perhaps it’s down to a new lifestyle regime: spin classes on the Kings Road, a vegan diet and the support of her well-connected friendship group (celebrity nutritionist and BFF Gabriela Peacock is on speed dial anytime she needs advice on looking and feeling fabulous).

Bea, as she is known to friends, is low-key, discreet, but full of fun and a delight to be around. (It helps that she doesn’t take herself too seriously: she had the last laugh when it came to that fateful hat, auctioning it online for charity and raising more than £80,000.)

But while her younger sister Eugenie shares posts with wit and charm on Instagram, @beayork is a closed book. Her account is private. Meanwhile IRL, she is everywhere everyone yearns to be, gracing the top of the most exclusive guest lists. There she was at Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal’s private party at his home in Kensington Palace Gardens, where she glowingly debuted her new relationship on the London social scene, a few months after the couple started dating. And there, at Karlie Kloss’ star studded wedding to Joshua Kushner in Wyoming (she spent the night laughing alongside her close friend Ellie Goulding).

There have been drinks with Lenny Kravitz, evenings with her old friend and charity partner Holly Branson, double dates with her sister at Gold in Notting Hill, or at Celine Dion’s Hyde Park concert, where the carefree Bea danced the night away behind the VIP cordon, before continuing the party at Chiltern Firehouse with her new beau.

She’s at all the top Society weddings – Ellie Goulding and Caspar Jopling’s at Castle Howard, with Sienna Miller and Orlando Bloom, in an iridescent green dress by The Vampire’s Wife, and trackside at the Grand Prix Bahrain with Edoardo. She’s at royal events: Buckingham Palace with her parents for Prince Andrew’s [email protected] charity event; and in amongst the full royal firm at the Trooping The Colour. (Edoardo – Edo for short – has been welcomed by the family and credited for putting a smile back on their beloved Bea’s face after she had a spell of being unlucky in love.)

Just to think these last 12 months or so could have been miserable for the princess. In July 2018 her ex-boyfriend, Dave Clark, who she dated for 10 years, married Lynn Anderson in an idyllic ceremony at Borgo Egnazia in Italy, with actor Ashton Kutcher and music guru Scooter Braun in attendance.a

As the guests toasted the happy couple, elsewhere on the continent Bea arrived at Club 55 in St Tropez, fresh off a luxury yacht, laidback in a kaftan, without a care in the world. This year, she was at another Italian wedding, this one in Siena, while Edo twirled her around the dancefloor in a close embrace, to Florence and the Machine’s You’ve Got The Love.

Recently, she’s had her own happy news, taking her from ‘last on the dancefloor’ to her own first dance, as she announced her engagement to Edo in late September, with a spring 2020 wedding on the cards. Now that is a perfect fairytale ending.
