The Queen reportedly didn’t know much about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s plans to step back from royal life, finding out with the rest of us when it was reported on TV
The Queen feels “monumentally let down” by her grandson Prince Harry’s decision to step back as a senior royal, one of her closest confidantes has revealed.
The Monarch is said to have known little of Harry and Meghan’s plans until reading them on an iPad at her Sandringham estate before switching on the news.
While shes upset about their decision and how it has been handled, there is one part of their choice that has hit her particularly hard – his responsibility to his duty.
An insider told Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl : “Perhaps it’s a generational thing, or the way she was brought up, but duty is everything to the Queen and she will find this the most upsetting part of all.”
They claim that a sense of duty has been “instilled” in her since she was a child and “the crown is everything to her”.
They go on: “At the end of the day she is 93 and this has been a genuine shock for her. After everything she has done for Harry she feels monumentally let down.”
Many other members of the Royal Family are said to be upset about the hurt Meghan and Harry’s decision has caused for the Queen.
The source added: “The family are all very upset at how the Sussexes have behaved, not least because of the impact it has had on the Queen, who has a very frail husband, the whole Andrew problem to deal with and now Harry, who is frankly behaving like a bolshie teenager.
“He has dropped a bombshell and left the Queen to pick up the pieces. It has not been great for their relationship. What was once a very warm and jokey grandmother grandson rapport has dissipated.”
Prince Philip is also said to be extremely cross by the decision.
Before retiring in 2017, the Duke dedicated decades of his life to his public duties – standing by the Queen’s side through thick and thin.
He now spends much of his time in a farmhouse on the edge of the Norfolk estate, but is believed to have returned to the main house to comfort the “disappointed” Queen in the wake of the crisis.
A source told The Sun on Sunday that Philip asked “what the hell are they playing at?” after being told about Harry and Meghan’s announcement.
The source added: “To say that the Duke feels let down would be a considerable understatement. He is deeply hurt.
“But he was spitting blood when aides informed him what had happened. Philip has accused Harry and Meghan of lacking respect and he is weary of their behaviour.”
