The death of Princess Diana is still one of the most tragic stories. And it showed the world the reality of fame and what it can cost you. It has been over two decades since the world lost the warm and generous Princess Diana. Even those who had never had the chance to meet her are still mourning her death.
Over the years, there have been many conspiracy theories about the exact cause of Princess Diana’s death. But the authorities have ruled it as a terrible accident that was caused by the overzealous paparazzi that were relentlessly chasing the young princess through the streets of Paris.
When the world heard that Diana was essentially killed by paparazzi, it changed the way people viewed the media. Celebrities from all over the world started to take extra steps to protect themselves against paparazzi, and even Diana’s own sons now have a deep hatred for the paparazzi and their extreme intrusiveness.
Recently, there have been new eyewitness accounts that suggest that Diana’s death was not caused by paparazzi at all. So, could it be possible that the entire world has been wrong about the paparazzi for all of these years? Here is what we know.
Why do people believe that the paparazzi were the cause of Princess Diana’s death?
On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, were enjoying a nice vacation in Paris. They had planned to go out and see the sights that night with their bodyguard and their driver. When Diana and Fayed were leaving the hotel that night, they were bombarded by a sea of paparazzi waiting for them outside.
As Diana, Fayed, her bodyguard, and their driver were driving away from the hotel, many people spotted the paparazzi getting in their cars to follow the princess. And that is where the troubled started. It has been reported that once the car that Diana was in had gotten onto the freeway, the driver decided to drive at dangerously high speeds in hopes of losing the photographers.
Because the car was going so fast, it lost control once it got into the tunnel and crashed into one of the pillars, killing Diana, her boyfriend, and the driver. After the crash, an autopsy report showed that the driver of the car that Diana was in was, in fact, intoxicated. However, many people still stood by the fact that if the driver didn’t have to outrun the paparazzi then the crash would have never happened.
A new witness to the accident claims paparazzi were not to blame
Since the accidents, there have been many conspiracies about what caused Diana’s death. Some people believe that she was targeted by the royal family and that her death was actually no accident.
On September 23, Dr. Phil had a panelist of investigators and researchers on his show who have worked tirelessly to try to find the truth of Diana’s tragic death. Two of the guest that he had on his show were a journalist and former detective Dylan Howard and Colin McLaren respectively. The two men have teamed up to investigate the death of Diana and they both wrote the book, Diana: Case Solved: The Definitive Account That Proves What Really Happened.
According to US Weekly, the two men claim that paparazzi had nothing to do with the death of Princess Diana. Instead, they blame a white Fiat Uno that was also driving in the tunnel at the same time and had clipped the side of Diana’s car, which sent the car spinning out of control.
Howard and McLaren said that they had interviewed the driver of the Fiat, whose name is Le Van Thanh, and after talking to him, they are convinced that the paparazzi had nothing to do with the accident.
There is a passage in Howard and McLaren’s book that reads:
“Our new research has shown that the paparazzi were not to blame in Diana’s death and that it was instead a case of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We have found that on the night of her death, the $123,000 Mercedes that carried Diana and others was capable of easily out-accelerating every single vehicle that the members of the paparazzi were driving. In short, there was no neck-and-neck chase, as such as thing was an impossibility.”
There were also two other witnesses on the show that claim they saw Diana’s car after the police arrived and it looked as if the police were not investigating the crash properly. And that no one really seemed to help Diana.
Instead, there were several paparazzi that were already on the scene and they were taking pictures of the severely injured princess.
What was the cause of Princess Diana’s death?
It’s hard to say for sure whether or not the paparazzi actually did have anything to do with the accident.
No matter what may have caused the car to get in an accident that night, there is no denying the fact that having a drunk driver behind the wheel of Diana’s car certainly didn’t help matters.
