Prince Charles reportedly wanted to distract the public when he separated from Princess Diana, but his plans were thwarted by his own mother, Queen Elizabeth. In his book, Charles: A Biography, author Anthony Holden revealed that Charles had hatched a plan that would divert attention away from his failing marriage, but Queen Elizabeth vetoes his idea before it got off the ground.

Inside Charles’s grand scheme

Prince Charles’s marital woes made headlines across the world in the early 1990s, and he was desperate to distract the media at all costs. With that in mind, Prince Charles allegedly came up with a plan that coincided with Her Majesty’s 40th anniversary on the throne.

According to Express, Holden says that Prince Charles approached his mother about constructing a fountain inside Parliament Square. The neo-classical monument would be built in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s long reign — and provide the distraction Prince Charles desperately needed.

But instead of going along with her son’s plan, a shrewd Queen Elizabeth vetoed the idea. Looking back, this was a brilliant decision on behalf of Her Majesty, especially considering all the problems piling up at the royal family’s doorstep.

“Amid the deaths of a recession with hard-pressed Births tax payers processing about subsiding the world’s wealthiest woman, the Queen herself was quick to veto her loving son’s idea,” Holden shared.

As if things could not get any worse for Prince Charles, Princess Diana’s solo trip to India that same year highlighted how fractured their marriage had become. The photos of Princess Diana standing by herself at the Taj Mahal sent a clear message to royal watchers around the world: she was now all alone.

Queen Elizabeth takes heat for Princes Charles’s divorce

By 1992, things had reached a breaking point for Princess Diana, who came clean about her husband’s affair with his long-time love, Camilla Parker Bowles. From there, the couple’s marriage spiraled out of control until their official divorce in 1996.

During Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s darkest days, Queen Elizabeth also came under fire over their failed marriage. In particular, Her Majesty was heavily criticized when it was discovered that she was the one who pushed for the divorce.

Critics accused Queen Elizabeth of not having a rigid conscience. They also believed that by telling Prince Charles to get divorced, she was destroying the idea of marriage.

To make things even worse, the Church of England was not a fan of divorcees getting remarried, which definitely complicated things for the monarchy. This is one reason why Prince Charles issues a statement after the divorce saying that he planned on remaining single.

That promise, of course, did not last. Prince Charles started dating his mistress in the wake of the divorce, and the pair eventually got married in 2005.

Is Prince Harry doomed to repeat his father’s mistakes?

While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear happily in love, there are some royal watchers who are afraid that they might follow in Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s footsteps.

There is no denying that the couples share a lot in common. Not only did they get married less than two years after meeting each other, but they also come from families that have experienced a little dysfunction.

Markle’s family has been well documented over the past few years, and her relationship with her father, Thomas Markle, is strained to this day. Prince Harry’s parents, of course, separated when he was a young boy.

He also tragically lost his mother to a car accident in Paris in 1996, something that caused him great mental pain over the years.

Although they share similarities, there are important differences between the couples. One of the biggest differences is how Markle was a lot older when she tied the knot with Prince Harry. Princess Diana, on the other hand, was very young when she exchanged vows with Prince Charles.

Unless their marriage takes a serious turn for the worse, it is safe to say that Prince Harry and Markle are headed down the right path.
