Prince Harry witnessed how South Africa defeated England in the Rugby World Cup Final in Japan. However, there was a group of netizens who didn’t like his action. Although the Duke of Sussex delivered words of encouragement to his country’s team, he celebrated with their opponent that made a lot of people react.
A netizen called Prince Harry a “disgrace” after he was seen celebrating with South Africa. One irate fan questioned the move of Meghan Markle’s husband on Twitter. “Why the [explicit] was #princeharry having a beer with the SA team after the game!!! He could have just popped in and said well done, but to celebrate the victory with them is a [explicit] disgrace,” it said.
Another netizen asked why Prince Harry wasn’t with the English team to check if they were okay after the defeat. This move, allegedly, made the Duke of Sussex looked like he was seeking media attention despite his claims that he was traumatized by the press after the death of his mother, the late Princess Diana.
The netizen claimed that Prince Harry, intentionally, went to see the South African players after they won because they got the world’s attention. If he, indeed, has press phobia, he should have hidden in England’s dressing room, away from the camera. He could have consoled the losing team because the media attention was focused on the winning group, accusing the father-of-one of being a hypocrite.
Some netizens defended Prince Harry, saying he has been known for his love and support to South Africa since time immemorial. Also, the country is part of the Commonwealth, so he also has to celebrate with them.
In his speech, Prince Harry praised the England rugby team for their “outstanding job.” He even told them to hold their heads up high despite their loss. He also urged the team to be proud of their achievement, making it in the final cup.
In a post on the Sussex Royal Instagram, Prince Harry said that, although it wasn’t England’s night, the whole nation was proud of the achievement of the country’s team for the past few months. “Hold your heads high boys, you did an outstanding job, and we couldn’t have asked more from you,” he said.
Prince Harry also congratulated the South African team on their win. He commended the group and said that he couldn’t think of any other nation that deserved the victory more. He also added that rugby united all of the people in more ways than they could imagine, and that night, it unified the whole of South Africa.
