We read a lot about the royal family, so it’d be fair to say you think you know them well. There’s the Queen, Prince Charles, then Prince William, Kate Middleton and their family – plus Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their son Archie.
But the royal family – and in particular, the line of succession – extends far beyond those famous faces. Did you know there’s a whole generation of Millennial and Gen Z royal family members out there that you’ve most likely never heard of? We’ve done some Instagram digging to give you all the intel you need…
Who is he? Sam Chatto is the eldest son of Lady Sarah Chatto and David Chatto, making the Queen his great aunt.
Where in the line of succession is he? 25th, just behind his mum.
What does he do? Just like his brother, 23-year-old Sam studied History of Art at Edinburgh University. He started there in 2014 and graduated in the summer of 2018. On Instagram, Sam refers to himself as a “maker [and] writer”, and that he is – the young royal has a love of pottery and he makes and sells clay crafts from his studio in West Sussex.
Who is he? Arthur Chatto, brother of Sam, is the youngest son of Lady Sarah Chatto and David Chatto. 20-year-old Arthur – or ‘Art’ as he likes to go by on Instagram – is the grandson of the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret. Lady Sarah Chatto is her only daughter.
Where in the line of succession is he? A solid 26th.
What does he do? Art is in his third year at Edinburgh University, studying (funnily enough) History of Art. By the looks of Instagram, he’s pretty outdoorsy, enjoying mountain climbing and diving. He also seems to dabble in a bit of the old #sponcon, with a link to technical mountain clothing brand Jöttnar in his bio.
Who is he? Charles Armstrong-Jones, who’s also known by his courtesy title Viscount Linley, is a descendant of the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret. He and sister Margarita are the children of Margaret’s only son, David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon.
Where in the line of succession is he? 22nd.
What does he do? 20-year-old Charles keeps his Instagram account private, but according to his LinkedIn profile, the royal has just started his third year at Loughborough University studying Product Design Engineering. The former Eton student recently made a public appearance with his great aunt, Queen Elizabeth, at a church service in Balmoral, Scotland.
Who is she? The younger sister of Charles, 17-year-old Margarita is the only granddaughter of Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister. Margarita is daughter of, furniture maker David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon and Serena Armstrong-Jones, Countess of Snowdon.
Where in the line of succession is she? 23rd. Margarita and her brother come just after Zara Tindall’s daughters, Mia and Lena.
What does she do? Margarita is only 17, so she’s not even reached university age yet, never mind career. But on the bio of her (private) Instagram account, she links to a jewellery page, Matita Jewellery, which is described as “hand made silver jewellery”. So it seems the creative genes have been passed down from her dad.
Who is he? Edward Windsor, or Eddy Downpatrick as he’s known professionally, is a royal family member stemming from Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent. Prince Edward (Eddy’s grandfather) is the son of Queen Elizabeth’s uncle, Prince George, making him the Queen’s cousin. Prince Edward’s eldest son, George Windsor, is Eddy’s dad. Make sense? Oh, also, Eddy is the godson of Princess Diana.
Where in the line of succession is he? He’s not. He was excluded for becoming a Roman Catholic.
What does he do? A former financial analyst, 30-year-old Eddy is now a fashion designer, having founded his own label, Fidir. The menswear brand is inspired by the landscape of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, which Eddy loves. “Nowhere else in the world makes me quite so misty eyed. Rarefied light… brooding gloom… there’s a lot of the sensorial to be taken from that,” he once said in an interview.
Who is she? Lady Marina Windsor is the 27-year-old sister of Eddy Downpatrick and Lady Amelia Windsor.
Where in the line of succession is she? Just like her brother, Eddy, Marina was removed from the line of succession for being Catholic. She was confirmed in the Catholic church (following her mother’s faith) in 2008.
What does she do? The former Cambridge University student keeps a low profile in comparison to her siblings. While she once modelled in Tatler (back in 2010), it’s been reported that she didn’t want to pursue fashion as a career, instead expressing interest in foreign diplomacy. But who knows whether that ever materialised…
Who is she? 24-year-old Lady Amelia Windsor is another granddaughter of Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, who’s the Queen’s first cousin. She is the youngest of three, and a daughter of George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, and Sylvana Tomaselli, a Canadian academic and historian.
Where in the line of succession is she? 39th – and she’s the only one of her siblings to be in line to the throne.
What does she do? Lady Amelia Windsor is perhaps the most high profile of this young royal bunch. The model has a casual 80k followers on Instagram, and has walked in fashion shows for the likes of Dolce & Gabbana. The University of Edinburgh graduate is fluent in Italian (È moda, cercala) and has also tried her hand at fashion design with a footwear and accessories collaboration with Penelope Chilvers and Warchild.
Who is he? Colombus’ royal heritage goes a little something like this: his mum (Lady Helen Taylor) is the granddaughter of Prince George, Duke of Kent, who was Queen Elizabeth’s uncle. Got that? He’s basically one of the Queen’s first cousin’s grandsons. I think.
Where in the line of succession is he? At 44th in line, it’s pretty safe to say Colombus will never be King.
What does he do? I’m not going to lie, I’m not really sure. But I have a sneaky suspicion he might live in New York, which is something. 25-year-old Columbus occasionally attends fancy events like the Many Hopes Spring Ball and the Yorkville Ball at The Union Club (both in New York) and gets papped by photographers when he’s there. And that, my friends, is we have to go on for this Insta-private royal.
Who is she? Okay, here goes: Flora’s dad, James Ogilvy, is the son of Princess Alexandra, Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin. Princess Alexandra is another child of the Queen’s uncle, Prince George.
Where in the line of succession is she? 56th. Although if she was born now Flora would be 55th, seeing as she’s older than her brother. But as the archaic rules of succession which prioritised men over women regardless of birth order were still in force when Flora was born, she was bumped down following the birth of her brother Alexander in 1996.
What does she do? 25-year-old Flora, like many of her royal relatives, works in the art world. After studying History of Art (a royal favourite) at Bristol University between 2013 – 2016, she set up her own company, Arteviste, which “creates editorial, video and events-based content focused on the contemporary art market” according to LinkedIn. Flora credits herself as a writer, curator and speaker in her specialist area of art.
Who is she? Zenouska is the daughter of Marina Ogilvy, who is the daughter of Princess Alexandra, another of the Queen’s first cousins.
Where in the line of succession is she? Bottom of the pile (but only in number), Zenouska is 59th in line to the throne.
What does she do? The 29-year-old royal relative lives in London and is head of marketing at Halcyon Days, a luxury retailer selling home wear, jewellery and accessories. By the looks of her Instagram account, Zenouska has a love of fashion, regularly showing off outfits by designers like Mary Katrantzou, Alessandra Rich, and a LOT of Carolina Herrera.
