Why Kate Middleton Went to Therapy With Her Brother James

James Middleton is opening up about his mental health struggles like never before. In a new interview with The Telegraph, the entrepreneur detailed his battle with depression, revealing that he was once in such a dark place that he couldn’t even talk to his family.

Luckily, he eventually sought help. And when he did, he invited Kate Middleton and some other family members to his therapy sessions so that they could better understand him and then try to help him sort through his issues.

Inside James Middleton’s mental health battle

In an Oct. 11 interview with The Telegraph, Middleton reflected on how he once was too depressed to do “anything.”

“I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t read a book, I couldn’t watch a film, I couldn’t eat. If I ate something it just sat there,” he explained. “I was just like, ‘What am I meant to do?’”

Middleton continued, “I was better off in my own company, so I didn’t have the additional worry of someone thinking, ‘What’s wrong with him?’ I removed myself from everything.”

He avoided his own family

This includes his sister, Kate, who has worked with mental health charities such as Place2Be. In the interview, Middleton explained that he didn’t want them to know something was wrong.

“The fact is, no matter what experience someone has, your family members are the hardest people [to talk to],” he explained. “You also have a very different way of interacting with your family than you do with your friends. I’m the youngest child, so I think that’s normal. And they are so tuned into you that they can see what other people can’t.”

But even his friends noticed, and Middleton wound up going to a private psychiatric hospital for a consultation. He spent a year in cognitive behavioral therapy, where his family members often joined him.

“That was so important because that helped them understand me and how my mind was working,” he explained. “And I think the way the therapy helped me was that I didn’t need my family to say, ‘What can we do?’ The only thing they could do was just come to some of the therapy sessions to start to understand.”

Therapy helped him find love

After seeking help, Middleton met French financial expert Alizee Thevenet in the summer of 2018. They dated for a year before getting engaged in September.

Middleton said he doubts that he and Thevenet would be in the place they are if he hadn’t sought help for his mental health struggles.

“‘Would I be in this place now? To have fallen in love with her, and for her now to be my fiancée in essentially the space of a year and a month? Probably not,” he told the outlet.

We’re glad to see Middleton in good spirits and that he had such a great support system. We wish him the best moving forward.
